Description:
CMU’s Center for Learning through Games and Simulations (CLGS) and Gen Con are collaborating to bring you courses on applied tabletop game design. These courses take place in a synchronous online environment using the Gather.town platform. Participants will be taught by industry experts as well as an academic expert from the CLGS. The courses are designed with an active learning curriculum in mind with minimal lecture content. Participants will be able to apply what they are learning to both their game nights and their career.

This presentation presents approaches to using games in the college classroom with an eye toward avoiding frequent pitfalls, especially with regards to assessment. It explores the types of skills that are best learned through games, misconceptions about the possibility of learning through play, and ways in which ungrading strategies can be used to appropriately assess desired student learning outcomes.
