Afterverse is an original roleplaying game system and universe. The design principles of this system include the bringing together of role-players with powergamers, by rewarding good roleplaying directly with XP. A major theme is continuity, and campaigns can be set at any point in the game's canon, with cultures, worlds, characters, and technology changing and progressing all the way through. In that spirit, the five beta test games being run at Origins are a generational story following a line of heroes through 60 years of the game's 400-year history.
The first of these takes place in 2058, 8 years after humanity is subdued by the alien race known as Bactarans. A group belonging to the Union Underground gang has traveled from Texas to South America to sabotage a pending launch of supplies to the occupiers' ships in orbit, and steal a valuable piece of technology in the process.

Now her granddaughter Cere is favorite to take the office of Grand Mayor, until the ghastly murder of the family's eldest retainer casts a dread pall over their name. Demagogues spread stories of infernal pacts and sacrifices, and the Guild of Magicians is ever ready to fan the flames. Amid name-calling from all sides and allegations of corruption, a group of citizens from all sides is deputized to observe the investigation as it unfolds, ignorant of the danger they will find!
