Michilimackinac in Crisis: The Fur Trade During Pontiac’s War
Summary:
Experience a game designed to help students engage with history through different perspectives, followed by a discussion of how to design games for high school classrooms.
Description:
This is a roleplaying game designed for high school classrooms. This session will be playtesting the debate over fur trade rights and regulations among the inhabitants of the Michilimackinac region and the treaty-making mechanics. After the playtest there will be an opportunity to discuss the gameplay and mechanics.
Attendees will receive a character sheet for a historical figure from 1763 Michilimackinac. Participants will negotiate fur trade regulations through debate and speeches, and toward the end of the roleplay will be asked to write a treaty.The playtest will take approximately forty minutes.
Attendees will have an opportunity to discuss the gameplay experience and the mechanics of the game as well as the effectiveness of the game at meeting learning objectives for history and engaging students in education.

Many of the educational games used in classrooms are reskinned review games. It is more engaging to use games to teach the concepts. In this workshop, we will try out several hands on/ minds on games that teach academic content in an engaging way.
The Tragedy of the Commons is a simple simulation game that includes cooperation and competition to teach conservation and economic concepts. Monster Storms is a competitive card game with players competing to build up the largest storms using weather variables. Chemical Dice is a competitive dice game that focuses on building the chemical formulae of different compounds.
Participants will receive a usb drive with print and play pdf versions of the games.
